Doesn't refurbished mean something is wrong with it?
If you see used air compressors for sale on an auction site or classified ad, you do want to be sure that it is in good working condition. However, refurbished or reconditioned air compressors sold through a retailer or online source are tested thoroughly to be sure they are up to par. It may have been broken, or just gone through normal wear and tear. Any parts not working properly have been replaced with new parts, or restored to selling condition.
How do I know it will work?
Refurbished air compressors for sale may come with a warranty, but some may not. The ones that do will have less of a warranty period than brand new compressors do. Before you buy, make sure that there is some kind of guarantee as to its performance. If you are only going to use the compressor for one or two projects, you may prefer to rent one. If you want one for frequent use, then a warranty is of much greater importance.

How long do these compressors last?
Usually, an air compressor has a lifespan of around a few hundred hours. Any of these refurbished compressors for sale should list how long they have been used, or the seller should be able to answer that question for you directly before you buy it.
How do I choose a good refurbished air compressor?
Take a look through online classifieds and auctions, and see what the typical asking price is. You can also check your local area for auctions and estate sales, as these places are much more likely to offer compressors that have been tested.
Price is not the only factor, of course. Compare brands, and see if the refurbished compressors that you are finding are worth the asking price. Some brands will be worth more than others, even if they have been reconditioned. DeWalt and Bosch are two brands that have a good reputation for performance, and refurbished models will cost you more than other types...but in many cases this will be worth it.
Also, make sure that any compressor for sale that you are interested in buying has a good pump, with enough CFM for your purposes. Know how much you need, and then look for a model that has a bit more than that. Don't spend more than you have to just because you find a compressor with amazing horsepower...if you don't need that much, then you've just wasted your money.
